Journey Report

(After attending New Year Conferences held in 6 continents)

"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Eph 4:3) 

In Chicago UBF I delivered the 2019 New Year message (Jn 17) on Nov. 25, 2018, with the title, “That all of them may be one.” By God’s grace, I then began my attendance of the continental conferences delivering the new year message a total of 10 times in different continents as below.

Korea Dec. 10-12 / Africa Dec. 14-16 Ghana / M. East Dec. 21-23 Cyprus / Europe Dec. 27-28 Romania / Australia Dec. 31- Jan. 2 Brisbane / Asia Jan. 3-5 Ulaanbataar / CIS Jan. 4-6 Irkutsk / N. America Jan. 10-12 / L. America Jan. 17-19 Bolivia.

The highlights were as follows:

1. God blessed the new year message at each conference, and through the fellowship of God’s word and prayer, the unity of our community was consolidated among missionaries and native shepherds. Further, as the theme of the message was about unity which is Jesus' hope for us, we could experience and strengthen oneness.

2. God helped me to learn about and understand the suffering and hardships of our missionaries and native leaders. In particular, our missionaries to the Middle East are growing in their faith, and building up genuine relationships of love with one another as true family members in God from being under the same loneliness and persecution. We need to pray for them all the more.

3. I realized that the ministries in Korea, Europe and North America are the spiritual engine of our community, and they have to more positively pray and support our co-workers working in other parts of the world.

4. The leadership succession of native leaders is well-established in Africa. Among those who attended the conference in Ghana, the number of native leaders that attended were 24, missionaries 13, and the guests were 5. Native shepherds there continue to grow into responsible and sacrificial leaders. Meanwhile, in spite of hardships, the work of the Spirit in Latin America is evident. God's work grows on the soil of sacrifice where a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies. I realized that we must pray and support all the more our suffering missionary co-workers in Latin America.

5. The common point of all the conferences was that they were full of joy like a heavenly banquet. The missionaries and native leaders met with real gladness as if meeting their own brothers and sisters, and shared their joy and love as comrades in a spiritual battle field. We give thanks and praise to God that he formed this community of true love and matures it more as time goes by.

6. God kept me in good condition in his grace throughout the journey in spite of frequently changing jet lag. In one month and a half I had to travel about seventy thousand plus miles, equivalent to 3 times the circumference of the earth. The temperature varied from higher than 30 Celsius in places like Ghana and Australia, to lower than minus 30 Celsius degrees in Ulaanbataar and Irkutsk. I got the cold a few times yet amazingly it was gone by the next day. Through this, I realized how powerful the prayer support of our co-workers was! I really thank those who prayed for my journey.

As I finish my 2019 New Year mission journey to the various continents, one word struck my heart. "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace "(Eph 4:3). We were basically a difficult people to be one with because of our selfishness and pride. But Jesus, by shedding his blood, demolished the barriers between us and united us as one body. The Spirit of God worked among us to be the members of a spiritual community of which its head is Christ. God formed a mission community which is wholly dedicated to world campus mission and raising disciples. Still today the Holy Spirit is unceasingly working to keep the unity of our community.

There are many challenges and threats to break our unity in the world. Satan causes believers to distrust one another and split up the community. Our weaknesses and sinful desires cause conflicts with other co-workers. We must acknowledge this reality and, in all situations, accept one another with humility and love. We must make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. In particular, in our postmodern generation, we tend not to involve ourselves in others’ lives and tend to be indifferent to how people live. Yet if we have that attitude, each one of us will end up living the lives as we see fit like in the time of the Judges (Judges 21:25), and the unity of our community will collapse. Therefore, we need be spiritually awake and keep the unity of the Spirit in order to continually be used by God. For this reason, I pray that we may accept one another, be eager to gather together for prayer, and strengthen our unity. May God's abundant grace be with our mission co-workers who are scattered all around the world but are yet faithfully and sacrificially serving the Lord. Amen!

Informe de Viaje

(Después de asistir a las Conferencias de Año Nuevo celebradas en 6 continentes)

"solícitos en guardar la unidad del Espíritu en el vínculo de la paz;" (Efesios 4: 3)

En UBF Chicago, entregué el mensaje de Año Nuevo 2019 (Jn 17) el 25 de noviembre de 2018, con el título "Para que todos sean uno." Por la gracia de Dios, comencé a asistir a las conferencias continentales compartiendo el mensaje de año nuevo un total de 10 veces en diferentes continentes como se muestra a continuación.

Corea del 10 al 12 de diciembre / África del 14 al 16 de diciembre (Ghana) / M. Este del 21 al 23 de diciembre (Chipre) / Europa del 27 al 28 de diciembre (Rumania) / Australia del 31 de diciembre al 2 de enero (Brisbane) / Asia del 3 al 5 de enero (Ulaanbataar) / CIS enero 4-6 (Irkutsk) / N. América enero 10-12 / L. América enero 17-19 (Bolivia).

Los aspectos más destacados fueron los siguientes:

1. Dios bendijo el mensaje de año nuevo en cada conferencia, y a través de la comunión de la palabra de Dios y la oración, la unidad de nuestra comunidad se consolidó entre los misioneros y los pastores nativos. Además, como el tema del mensaje era sobre la unidad, la cual es la esperanza de Jesús para nosotros, pudimos experimentar y fortalecer la unidad.

2. Dios me ayudó a aprender y comprender el sufrimiento y las dificultades de nuestros misioneros y líderes nativos. En particular, nuestros misioneros en el Medio Oriente están creciendo en su fe y construyendo relaciones genuinas de amor entre sí como verdaderos miembros de la familia en Dios por estar bajo la misma soledad y persecución. Necesitamos orar por ellos aún más.

3. Me di cuenta de que los ministerios en Corea, Europa y América del Norte son el motor espiritual de nuestra comunidad, y tienen que orar y apoyar más positivamente a nuestros colaboradores que trabajan en otras partes del mundo.

4. La sucesión de líderes nativos está bien establecida en África. Entre los que asistieron a la conferencia en Ghana, el número de líderes nativos que asistieron fue 24, los misioneros 13 y los invitados fueron 5. Los pastores nativos continúan convirtiéndose en líderes responsables y sacrificiales. Mientras tanto, a pesar de las dificultades, la obra del Espíritu en América Latina es evidente. La obra de Dios crece en la tierra del sacrificio, donde un grano de trigo cae al suelo y muere. Me di cuenta de que debemos orar y apoyar aún más a nuestros sufridos colaboradores misioneros en América Latina.

5. El punto común de todas las conferencias fue que estaban llenos de alegría como un banquete celestial. Los misioneros y los líderes nativos se reunieron con verdadera alegría como si se encontraran con sus propios hermanos y hermanas, y compartieron su alegría y amor como camaradas en un campo de batalla espiritual. Le damos gracias y alabamos a Dios porque formó esta comunidad de verdadero amor y la madura más a medida que pasa el tiempo.

6. Dios me mantuvo en buenas condiciones en su gracia durante todo el viaje, a pesar de que el jet lag cambiaba con frecuencia. En un mes y medio tuve que viajar más de setenta mil millas, equivalente a 3 veces la circunferencia del mundo. La temperatura variaba de más de 30 grados centígrados en lugares como Ghana y Australia, a menos de menos 30 grados centígrados en Ulaanbataar e Irkutsk. Me resfrié un par de veces, pero sorprendentemente ya no estaba resfriado al día siguiente. ¡A través de esto, me di cuenta de lo poderoso que era el apoyo de oración de nuestros colaboradores! Realmente agradezco a los que oraron por mi viaje.

Mientras terminaba mi viaje misionero de Año Nuevo 2019 a los diversos continentes, una palabra tocó mi corazón. "Solícitos en guardar la unidad del Espíritu en el vínculo de la paz " (Ef 4, 3). Básicamente, éramos personas difíciles con quienes ser unidos debido a nuestro egoísmo y orgullo. Pero Jesús, por medio de derramar su sangre, demolió las barreras entre nosotros y nos unió como un cuerpo. El Espíritu de Dios trabajó entre nosotros para ser miembros de una comunidad espiritual de la cual su cabeza es Cristo. Dios formó una comunidad misionera que está totalmente dedicada a la misión del campus mundial y el crecimiento de discípulos. Aún hoy, el Espíritu Santo está trabajando incesantemente para mantener la unidad de nuestra comunidad.

Hay muchos desafíos y amenazas para romper nuestra unidad en el mundo. Satanás hace que los creyentes desconfíen unos de otros y dividan a la comunidad. Nuestras debilidades y deseos pecaminosos causan conflictos con otros compañeros. Debemos reconocer esta realidad y, en todas las situaciones, aceptarnos con humildad y amor. Debemos hacer todos los esfuerzos posibles para mantener la unidad del Espíritu a través del vínculo de la paz. En particular, en nuestra generación posmoderna, tendemos a no involucrarnos en las vidas de los demás y tendemos a ser indiferentes a cómo vive la gente. Sin embargo, si tenemos esa actitud, cada uno de nosotros terminará viviendo la vida que consideremos adecuada como en el tiempo de los Jueces (Jueces 21:25), y la unidad de nuestra comunidad colapsará. Por lo tanto, necesitamos estar espiritualmente despiertos y mantener la unidad del Espíritu para que Dios nos use continuamente. Por esta razón, oro para que nos aceptemos unos a otros, estemos ansiosos por reunirnos para orar y fortalecer nuestra unidad. Que la abundante gracia de Dios esté con nuestros colaboradores en la misión que están dispersos por todo el mundo pero que todavía están sirviendo al Señor con fidelidad y sacrificio. ¡Amén!

성령이 하나되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라

(대륙 수양회 심방을 마치고)

"평안의 매는 줄로 성령의 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라" (엡 4:3)

저는 2018년 11월 25, 시카고 UBF 에서 요한복음 17장, '그들도 다 하나가 되어' 제목으로 2019 신년 메시지를 전하였습니다. 그 후에 하나님의 은혜로 아래와 같이 각 대륙을 순방하며 총 10번에 걸쳐 신년 메시지를 전했습니다.

한국 12월 10-12일 / 아프리카 12월 14-16일 가나 / 중동 12월 21-23일 사이프러스 / 유럽 12월 27-28일 루마니아 / 호주 12월 31일-1월 2일 브리즈번 / 아시아 1월 3-5 울란바토르 / CIS 1월 4-6 이르크투스크 / 북미 1월 10-12일 시카고 / 남미 1월 17-19일 볼리비아.

몇 가지 특기 사항을 아래와 같이 정리합니다.

1. 각 수양회마다 메시지를 전하고 선교사님들 및 현지 목자님들과 말씀과 기도로 교제하는 가운데 하나님께서 전 세계에 흩어진 우리 공동체의 유니티를 굳게 해주셨습니다. 하나님이 주신 신년 말씀도 마침 예수님의 우리들에 대한 소원인 "그들도 다 하나가 되어"이어서 더욱 하나됨을 경험하며 공고히 할 수 있었습니다.

2. 각 나라의 고유한 환경 가운데 투쟁하시는 선교사님들을 조금이나마 더 이해할 수 있게 해 주셨습니다. 특별히 중동 선교사님들은 외로움과 핍박 가운데서도 믿음의 중심을 지키며 참된 가족과 같이 서로 더욱 깊은 사랑의 관계성을 이루어 가고 있었습니다. 이 분들을 위한 특별한 기도가 더욱 필요함을 절감하였습니다.

3. 꾸준히 성령의 역사가 이루어지고 있는 한국과 유럽, 북미 역사가 우리 모임의 엔진 역할을 하고 있음을 보았습니다. 이러한 중추적인 대륙에서 전 세계에 파송된 선교사님들을 위해 더욱 열심히 기도하고 지원해야 함을 보았습니다.

4. 현지 리더십 계승이 잘 이루어지고 있는 곳은 아프리카입니다. 총 참석 인원 42명중 24명이 현지 목자들이고, 한국 선교사는 13명, 외부 손님이 5명이었습니다. 현지 목자들이 자립적이고 희생적인 리더들로 견고히 서 가는 것을 보았습니다. 고난이 많은 가운데서도 성령의 역사가 활발히 이루어지고 있는 곳은 중남미입니다. 하나님의 역사는 한 알의 밀알이 땅에 떨어져 죽는 희생을 기초로 성장합니다. 고난 많은 우리 중남미 선교사님들, 현지 목자님들 위해 더욱 기도해야 함을 깨달았습니다.

5. 모든 대륙의 공통점은 모인 수양회 마다 천국 잔치와 같은 기쁨이 있었다는 것입니다. 오랜만에 만나는 선교사님들, 현지 목자님들은 진정한 형제 자매요 영적 전쟁의 동지들로서 뜨거운 사랑과 애정을 나누었습니다. 하나님께서 우리 가운데 이러한 아름다운 사랑의 공동체를 이루어주시고, 날이 갈수록 더욱 성숙한 공동체로 성장하게 하시는 하나님께 감사와 찬양을 드립니다.

6. 한 달 반에 걸쳐 지구를 3번 도는 거리인 총 7만 마일을 여행하며, 자주 시차가 바뀌고 섭씨 영상 30도가 넘는 아프리카나 호주, 영하 30도 이하로 내려가는 몽골이나 러시아의 이르크추크를 넘나드는 여정 가운데 하나님께서 건강을 지켜주셨습니다. 감기에 걸리려다가 금새 나간 것들을 경험하면서, 동역자님들의 기도 지원이 얼마나 강력한 힘이 되는가를 깊이 체험하게 되었습니다. 부족한 이 종을 위해 기도해주신 여러 동역자님들께 진심으로 감사를 드립니다.

대륙 순방을 마치며 한 마디 말씀이 심령에 부딪쳐 왔습니다. 에베소서 4:3 "평안의 매는 줄로 성령의 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라." 우리는 본래 하나되기 힘든 자들이었습니다. 예수님은 이러한 우리를 위해 자신의 피를 흘려주심으로 이기적이고 교만한 우리들 사이를 가로 막는 담을 허무시고 한 몸이 되게 하셨습니다. 성령께서 역사하셔서 우리로 하여금 그리스도를 머리로 하는 영적 공동체의 지체가 되게 하셨습니다. 세계 선교와 캠퍼스 제자양성을 위해 온전히 드려지는 선교공동체를 이루어주셨습니다. 성령께서는 지금도 이러한 우리의 유기적인 연합이 하나가 되도록 쉬지 않고 역사하십니다.

세상에는 우리의 연합을 깨뜨리려는 많은 시도와 위협이 있습니다. 사탄은 성도들을 이간질시켜서 공동체를 분열시키려 합니다. 우리의 연약함과 욕심 때문에 동역자들 간에 갈등이 생깁니다. 우리는 이런 현실을 깊이 인식하고 어떤 경우에도 겸손과 사랑으로 서로 용납하고 평안한 상태를 유지하여 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지켜나가야 합니다. 특히 포스트모던 시대를 사는 우리는 서로 간섭하지 않고 각자 원하는 대로 자유롭게 살도록 방임하는 자세를 갖기 쉽습니다. 그러나 그러한 자세의 결국은 사사시대처럼 각 지부나 각 대륙마다 저마다 편한대로 신앙생활을 하게 하며(삿21:25) 결국 우리 공동체의 연합을 무너지게 합니다. 그러므로 더욱 깨어서 성령께서 이루어주신 그 연합을 견고히 이루어 계속하여 하나님께 쓰임 받는 모임이 되어야겠습니다. 우리가 이를 위해 서로 용납하며 모이기를 힘쓰며 더욱 하나됨을 견고히 이루어나가기를 기도합니다. 전 세계에 흩어져 죽도록 충성하시는 우리 선교 동역자님들께 주님의 크신 은혜가 있기를 기도합니다. 아멘!
