The Pandemic, an Opportunity to Share the Gospel!

Dear fellow workers in Christ,

Philippians 1:12 - Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

I’m writing to share with co-workers who pray for us and love us what God has been doing in this mission field, Uganda. 

All the world is suffering from COVID19.

It has already been three months since Uganda closed its borders, imposed a ban on vehicle traffic and any gatherings, including Sunday worship services. Due to a border lockdown, my two children are unable to go back to boarding school in Kenya, taking classes online. My oldest daughter, who cannot come home, is staying with Sh. Teddy and Liz in Chicago, USA.

Just as Apostle Paul was imprisoned in Rome for preaching the Gospel, we are currently in a prison called Corona. When the ban on gatherings was issued in mid-March, we decided to have a worship service in our homes. Due to Uganda’s poor internet circumstances, we cannot have virtual worship services, and even if we do upload videos of the message, it would have been very difficult for church members to download them. Therefore, we thought having family worship would be the best way. Based on Joshua 24:15, each household prays to become a family that serves Jehovah only. My family holds family worship every day, and I prepare a Sunday message each week. Before the Corona pandemic, we couldn’t hold a family worship service regularly due to a busy schedule. However, now being under lockdown, I’m thankful that my family can worship and have a fellowship together daily. My oldest daughter also joins our daily family worship service through face talk.

When we began to have Sunday worship service at home, I prepared a message in Korean. However, soon after, I realized that although it is a small number of people gathering to worship at home, I needed to prepare a message in English as usual, reminding myself that I am in a mission field. I began to prepare a message in English and asked my son to proofread it. Then, I decided to upload Sunday messages(not video clip but written message)to What’s App chat and share them with my coworkers. Then we greet and encourage one another.

Furthermore, local leaders (mainly house church members) prepared the five corona-adaptive special lectures and shared them by using Zoom. I was blessed to see their spiritual desire for the word of God. As we held the Bible study at 4 P.M. on Sunday, leaders, who could not attend before, joined the meetings. I can clearly hear the voice of co-workers whose voice tone is weak so that before I could not hear their voice clealy during Group bible study. Now missionaries also join this Group bible study. 

After finishing our five special bible studies, we started studying Exodus again that we had stopped for 3 months. When we prayed about our direction, God reminded us of our prayer topics: 'Bible Uganda, World mission':  pioneer all 43 campuses in Uganda and to send 25 missionaries by 2042 - 50th anniversary of establishing Uganda’s ministry. God made me realize that current situation is good opportunity for us to prepare for accomplishing our prayer topics. Local leaders lead Bible study each week, and based on the scripture, the priests of each house churches(missionaries and shepherds) prepare Sunday messages and deliver them in their homes. And they share their messages with other co-workers and Bible students. After Sunday family worship, we write and share testimonies/personal reflections based on the messages. All our brethren who are scattered because of COVID19 write testimony. We are planning to have a group bible study with our brothers and sisters through Zoom. The church will cover the cost of the internet.

My family started a testimony sharing last Sunday. I’ve been really enjoying this time of gathering and sharing testimonies. When we deeply meditate on the word of God and put it in my heart with patience, I believe that we will bear a fruit 30, 60, and 100 times as Jesus said. I envision each family and each church member to grow as pioneers of one campus. It is not easy to prepare and serve the message and to write and share testimonies weekly. Before the pandemic happened, it was almost impossible to imagine what we are doing now. I thank God for giving us faith to challenge ourselves to grow in the word of God.  

Just as Gospel continued to spread even when Paul was in prison, I pray that this pandemic time would be the opportunity for the spread of the gospel. We pray for the revival in each household and the meeting. Furthermore, I pray that our ministry will be ready to pioneer campuses and be used in both Bible Uganda and World Mission.

주님 안에서 모두 강건하신지요?

하나님께서 이곳 선교지에서 행하시는 일을, 기도해주시고 사랑해주시는 분들과 나누어야 한다는 생각만 하다 이제야 소식을 띄우게 됩니다. 

전 세계가 COVID-19로 인해 고통하고 있습니다. 이 곳 우간다도 국경을 폐쇄하고, 통행 금지령을 내리고, 주일 예배를 포함 모든 집회를 금지한 것이 벌써 3개월이 지났습니다. 저희 두 아이들도 케냐 학교로 돌아가지 못하고 온 라인 수업을 받고 미국에서 공부하고 있는 큰 딸은 우간다로 들어오지 못해 시카고에 계신 목자님 댁에 머물고 있습니다. 

사도 바울이 복음을 전하다 로마 감옥에 갇혀있었던 것처럼 저희는 지금 코로나라는 거대한 감옥에 갇혀있습니다. 저희 Makerere 지부는 집회 및 예배 금지령이 내리던 3월 중순부터 여호수아 24장 15절 말씀을 기초로 하여 “여호와만을 섬기는 가정이 되자” 방향을 잡고 각 가정에서 주일예배를 드리게 되었습니다. 우간다 인터넷 사정상 생방송으로 온 라인 예배를 드릴 수 없고 동영상을 올려놓아도 다운로드가 어려워 이것이 최선의 방법이라 생각되었습니다. 저희 가정도 날마다 가정 예배를 드리고 주일에는 제가 주일 말씀을 준비하여 주일예배를 드리고 있습니다. CORONA PANDEMIC 이전에는 가정 예배를 잘 드리지 못했는데 코로나 감옥 속에 있다 보니 시간적 여유가 생겨 가정 예배를 드리고 미국에 있는 큰 딸도 Face talk으로 연결되어 같이 예배를 드리면서 교제를 나눌 수 있어서 좋았습니다. 

가정에서 주일예배를 드리다보니 처음에는 주일 예배 메시지를 한국말로 간단히 준비했습니다. 그러다가 비록 소수가 모여 가정에서 예배를 드리지만 내가 지금 있는 곳이 선교지라는 사실을 인식할 때 평소대로 영어 메시지를 준비해야 됨을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 영어 메시지를 준비하고  원고 교정을 아들에게 부탁하였습니다. 이 주일 메시지를 what’s app에 올려  동역자 들과 나누며 서로 안부를 묻고 격려하였습니다. 

또한 현지 리더 들이 가정교회 중심으로  zoom을 이용해 코로나 대응 특별 말씀 공부 5강을 준비하였습니다. 저는 이들의 말씀에 대한 갈급함과 영적 소원에 은혜를 받았습니다.  성경 공부 모임에 동참해보니 아주 만족스러웠습니다. 그리고 다른 선교사님들도 이 말씀 공부에 동참하게 되었습니다. 주일 오후 4시에 말씀 공부를 하니 평소에 말씀 공부에 참석하지 못했던 리더 들도 동참할 수 있었습니다. 목소리가 작은 리더 들의 목소리도 또렷 하게 들을 수 있어서 좋았습니다. 그래서 5강의 특별 말씀 공부가 끝난 후에  3개월간 멈추었던 출애굽기 말씀 공부를 지난주부터 다시 시작하였습니다. 어떻게 말씀 공부를 준비할 것인가를 놓고 기도드릴 때 하나님께서는 저희 기도제목을 기억나게 하셨습니다. 

‘Bible Uganda, World Mission.’ 우간다 개척 50주년이 되는 2042년까지 우간다 43 전 캠퍼스 개척과 25명의 선교사를 파송하는 것입니다. 

현 상황이 이 기도제목을 이루는데 실질적인 준비를 할 수 있는 아주 좋은 기회라는 것을 깨닫게 해주셨습니다. 그래서 매주 말씀 공부를 현지 리더 들이 인도하고 이 본문에 기초하여 리더들이 개인적으로 주일 메시지를 준비하여  각 가정에서 전하는 것입니다. 그리고 요회 목자들은 가정에서 전한 메시지를 요회 동역자들과 양들과 나누는 것입니다. 주일 가정 예배 후에는 그 말씀에 기초해서 소감(personal reflexion)을 쓰고 나누는 시간을 갖고자 하였습니다. 모일 수 없는  동역자들도 각 처소에서 말씀에 기초해 소감을 쓰는 것입니다. 흩어진 형제 자매들을 위해서도  zoom을 이용하여 동일하게 출애굽기 그룹 성경 공부를 계획하고 있습니다. 인터넷 데이터 비용은 교회에서 지원하기로 하였습니다. 

저희 가정은 지난 주일부터 소감 모임을 시작하였습니다. 예배 후에 가족이 모여서 소감을 쓰고 나눌 때 은혜가 있었습니다. 이렇게 말씀을 듣고 마음에 새기고 뿌리를 내리며 인내할 때 예수님의 씨 뿌리는 비유 말씀처럼 30배, 60배, 100배의 열매를 맺게 될 것을 바라보게 되었습니다. 각 가정이 또 각 개인이 한 캠퍼스를 개척할 수 있는 역량을 가진 자로  자라는 vision을 보게 되었습니다. 물론 각 가정의 제사장들이 매주 주일 예배 메시지를 준비하고 섬기는 것, 매주 소감을 쓰고 나누는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 평상시에는 거의 불가능 한 것입니다. 그러나 시간적 여유가 있는 현 상황에서는 믿음으로 도전해 볼만 하다는 생각을 주셨습니다. 

바울이 감옥에 갇혀 있을 때도 복음은 갖히지 않고 오히려 진보가 있었던 것처럼 저희 가운데도 COVID-19 감옥 속에 있는 현 시점이 복음의 진보가 이루어지는 계기가 되기를 기도합니다. 저희 기도제목처럼 가정 교회와 요회(CELL 단위 모임) 가운데 복음의 진보와 부흥의 역사가 있기를 기도합니다. 더 나아가 언제든지 캠퍼스를 개척할 준비가 되어져서 성서 우간다와 세계 선교 가운데 모두 쓰임 받기를 기도합니다.
