EXPLORE THE PROMISED LAND

"But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it."

This year of 2012 is the beginning of the next 50 years of UBF. This year may have specific significance in each of our lives. We should thank God for guiding us this far and think about the promised land he is pointing to. I'd like to think with all of you about the promised land God gave us in two aspects. First is the world campus mission, and the second is the spiritual growth. May God open our eyes to see the promised land and may He give us the faith and spirit of Joshua and Caleb.

I. God commands exploration of Canaan (13:1-25)

The Book of Numbers begins with numbering the Israelites who could go to war at Mt. Sinai a year and a month after the Exodus. During that time, the Israelites made a covenant with God and became a special people who had fellowship with God at the Tent of Meeting. In spite of their sin of idolatry, God forgave them. The land God was going to give the Israelites was not an unoccupied paradise prepared for them. They had to fight with the occupants and conquer them to possess the land. God led them to the Desert of Paran where they could see the promised land. Then God commanded through Moses, "Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders." God wants us to do everything by faith, but he doesn't want us to do things blindly not knowing the situation and without strategy and tactics. In fact, the Bible records wars in which God commanded his servants to explore the battle fields, instructed strategies and tactics, whereby they won victories by obeying God's instructions. Exploring the enemy camp is a basic step before a military operation. Sun Bin's Art of War, a Chinese classic military manual, states, "If you know others and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know others but know yourself, you win one and lose one; if you do not know others and do not know yourself, you will lose in every single battle." There were two things Sun Bin did not know; the first is that "the battle belongs to the Lord" (1Sa 17:47), the second is that one can know himself and others when he has spiritual eyes.

God repeatedly called the land of Canaan "the land I am giving to the Israelites" or "the land I promised them on oath" (13:2, 14:16, 23, 30, 15:2). God wanted to encourage the Israelites by helping them to know the beauty of the land, be thankful to God, and be filled with desire to conquer and possess the land. God's command to explore the land reminds us of his command to Abraham, "Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever....Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you." (Ge 13:14-17) Think about the verbs in these verses--"Look around," "go," "walk through the land."

God wants us to look at the land he gives us and explore it. He wants us to walk through the land by faith and possess it in our hearts. The land is full of idol-worshipping enemies and corrupt secular cultures. God wants to bring about His kingdom through our conquest and possession of the land. We don't want war. Spiritually, however, the world is in war and the war will continue until our Lord's Second Coming. What is the promised land for us to conquer? It is the campuses we are ministering to. Our homes and work places are also the land God has given to us. For the past 50 years, God has blessed UBF to send out 1,800 missionaries to 91 countries. But 64% of 91 countries are in the pioneering stage with just one chapter. Before us there are 140 countries that are waiting for UBF missionaries. In the United States and Germany where the majority of UBF coworkers are working, we have reached only one quarter of the major campuses. God wants us to lift up our eyes and look at the promised land and continue the conquest for the coming 50 years.

Internally the promised land we should look at and conquer is spiritual maturity. God's will for us is to restore us in the image of Christ (Ro 8:28-29). For this purpose, God works in all things in our lives. Christ's image is formed through continuous battle with our old self, that is, the sinful nature. When our old self dies through obedience to God, we put on the new self and become spiritual men and women. We should check where we are in this spiritual campaign. We should press on like Apostle Paul to be united with Christ by following Christ's example in his death and resurrection (Php 3:10-12). To put off our old self, it often requires spiritual battle to the point of shedding our blood. At the moment when our old self dies, we experience the power of the resurrection and receive freedom in Christ. One leader I served came to me at night and said, "I made decisions to quit my habit of watching porno so many times, but I can't stop it." The Holy Spirit gave us the words from Ephesians 4:22-24, "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." He could not overcome temptations because he was still in his old self that loved lust. That night, he sincerely repented of his love for lust more than for God and gave his heart to God. From that time on, he was freed from the habit that had plagued his life for long.

Pride, self-glory seeking, and lust have deep roots. To uproot them, we need a hydraulic hoe and dynamite. When we dig deep by the hoe of the word of God until we expose the root of our sin, the Holy Spirit blows it up by his power and transforms us to be a new person. When we put on the new self, we can enter into life to the full which the Lord Jesus promised in John 10:10, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." We should also grow in faith, hope, and love until our home, fellowship, chapter and the UBF community as a whole have the kingdom of God fully. The kingdom of God fully comes when we obey the Lord's new command, "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (Jn 13:34). What a beautiful and precious community of brothers and sisters we have in UBF! Can we find such wonderful friends in the world? While focusing on our ministry and work, we often miss the blessed love fellowship among our members whom God chose before the creation of the world and called to be a family. Let us look after one another, considering each one in our community as more precious than the whole world. Let's continue building up a beautiful community of love so that the world may know God's love through us.

II. Reports of Exploration (13:26-14:9)

The 12 leaders returned with a cluster of grapes and other fruits after exploring the 250 miles long land. They said, "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey. Here is its fruit." People must have shouted with joy. "Look at the grapes. They are as big as golf balls!" But when they heard the explorers saying, "But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there," the atmosphere changed. The Anakites were giants who wore XXXL size of clothes. Goliath, whom boy David later fought with, was thought to be one of the remnants of the Anakites.

Then Caleb silenced the people and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." But the ten men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." (30-33) Here "spread a bad report" means "falsely accuse." If the land devoured those living in it, the people they saw must have been ill-fed and weak, contrary to what they said about them. "All the people we saw are of great size" sounds like an exaggeration. Any tribe or ethnic group is composed of people with varying height. Diversity in creation is God's wisdom and pleasure. They even reduced themselves to grasshoppers. Grasshoppers were the organic food John the Baptist ate (Mk 1:6). It was not difficult for the holy man to capture grasshoppers. The ten leaders were full of fearful imaginations of being captured by powerful enemies after fleeing here and there like grasshoppers.

What was their problem? They had no God in their sight, thoughts, and words. Caleb, Joshua, and the ten leaders left Egypt together and experienced God's power, character, and guidance together. Why then couldn't they have the spirituality which Caleb and Joshua had? It is just as the Apostle Paul pointed out in 1 Corinthians 3:1: There are believers who grow to live by the Spirit and believers who remain worldly. What determines one's spiritual growth? It is one's reverence for God and obedient attitude toward God. One who reveres God and lives before him feels God in all things, learns from Him and grows. On the other hand, one who lives before people and sees things with human eyes cannot grow spiritually. When the ten leaders saw the land of Canaan with human eyes, they saw fortified cities and strong and well-equipped enemies. On the other hand, they saw themselves as weakened by slavery in Egypt, and untrained with feeble equipment. They saw no possibility of victory in war, so they gave up. In order to justify themselves, they gave a bad report about the land. Caleb saw the same things the other explorers saw. But he could see the land with God's eyes through the Holy Spirit who dwelt in him. He saw that the people of the land were like prisoners sentenced to death under God's judgment. And Caleb was convinced that God would use his people as His instrument and give them the land. So he could say, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it" (30).

We are fighting against the secular humanism, materialism and the goddess of pleasure of this post-modern era. From the time of fishing young people to the time of raising them as disciples, we feel as if we are wrestling with giants. When we see the campuses with human eyes, we are filled with negative thinking and fear and we feel small and powerless. We are weak but God is strong. God is indeed great. Think about the Almighty God who created the vast universe. This God is with us. When we fix our eyes on the Almighty God, God becomes bigger and bigger in our minds and hearts and the problems become smaller and smaller until they disappear. And the Holy Spirit fills our minds and hearts with courage and conviction that "We can certainly triumph and conquer." Amen.

People who heard the report of the ten leaders raised their voices and wept aloud all night. Think about the scene of two million people sitting and wailing under the light from the pillar of fire, which was a sign of God's protection and love. It showed the tragedy of unbelief. All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron and said, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness! Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?" (14:2-3) "If only we had died in Egypt!"--this was the habitual grumble of the Israelites (Ex 14:11, 16:3, Nu 20:3). This was a grave sin of forgetting the grace of God who had redeemed them from their miserable life of slavery. Even though we forget all other things, we should not forget the grace of God who redeemed us. They even thought of going back to Egypt. They wanted to go back to slavery if only they could have security. They did not know the meaning of the freedom and privilege of serving God. Spiritual blessings involve sacrifice. When we know the meaning of the spiritual blessings, we can overcome all hardships with thanksgiving. And we can possess peace and joy that come from heaven in all circumstances. Only those who know the meaning of spiritual blessings can enter into the blessings.

These faithless people finally discussed about choosing a leader to take them back to Egypt. Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the congregation. (4-5) They probably fell facedown before God in apprehension of God's impending judgment upon the people. Then Joshua and Caleb who had gone with the ten leaders tore their clothes and said, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." (7-9) In ancient times, clothes were rare and expensive. Therefore tearing clothes was a big decision as well as an expression of great sorrow and righteous anger. What can we learn from Joshua and Caleb?

First, faith that believes God's promise. Joshua and Caleb had a conviction of conquest because they believed God's promise. God had promised Abraham to give his descendants the land and had foretold their slavery in Egypt, their exodus and return to the promised land (Ge 15:7-21). God confirmed this promise to Isaac and Jacob and later said to Moses, "So I have come down to rescue them from the land of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey"--the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (Ex 3:8). God surely keeps his word. Faith is full trust in God's promise. Joshua and Caleb had 100% trust in God's promise. Their faith came from their absolute trust in God himself. We have the Lord's promise, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Mt 28:18b-20). "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Mt 6:33). "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh" (Ga 5:16). When we believe in the Lord's promise, we can have the conviction and courage to challenge any situation and reveal God's glory.

Second, faith in God's sovereignty and power. Joshua and Caleb said, "If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, ... and will give it to us." To them, the strong enemies in the land were not a problem, because no one can stand against God if God leads his people into the land. If God Almighty, the Sovereign Lord does it, nothing is impossible. We must believe this and do his work. When people say, "It is not possible," we can say, "God can do it." Joshua and Caleb knew that only one thing is needed in order to see God's promise realized-- and that is, to please God. How can we please God? We can please God by believing in him (Heb 11:6). God is pleased with our repentance, obedience, and shepherd heart. We should pray for spiritual revival of America by faith. We should pray for raising 100,000 missionaries to evangelize the world's major campuses by faith. If God is pleased with us, he will lead us into the promised land and he will give it to us.

Third, victory in spiritual battle. Joshua and Caleb said, "Do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them." In the eyes of Joshua and Caleb, the people of the land looked like delicious food like pizza or "bulgogi". Other versions translate the latter part of this verse as "we will swallow them up" or "they are bread for us." Their appetite, confidence and desire to conquer are marvelous. They saw them as bread because they believed that the idols and evil spirits they relied on-- all ran away before the presence of God and God was with His people. They remind us of the Lord's promise, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you" (Ac 1:8). Joshua and Caleb were filled with the Holy Spirit because they defeated Satan's attack. Satan attacks us with arrows of doubt and fear whenever we try to do anything. When we are hit, we lose our strength and desire, and fall into negative thinking and complaints and some sing blues. As leaders in God's army, we must first win the spiritual warfare against Satan by holding on to God's words of promise. When the Holy Spirit works, the evil spirits of secular humanism, materialism, and carnal pleasure run away. Ephesians 6:16-17 says, "Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." When we are filled with the Holy Spirit by defeating Satan, we have burning desire and vision from God and we can work by the power of God.

Joshua and Caleb warned the Israelites, "Only do not rebel against the LORD." This verse teaches us that giving up the promised land due to unbelief is rebellion against God. Unbelief is a backward road that leads to failure and shame, while faith is a forward road that leads to victory and glory. We don't have a backward road. The Holy Spirit points to only a forward road towards the promised land. Let's not be afraid. Let's not be disappointed by our situation or little visible fruit. It's all right if we love God with all our hearts and do what we should do each day by faith. We are doing what God wants us to do if we raise the Bible students whom God gives us and our children to be spiritual men and women. God is working with us and He will fulfill His will in His way and in His time.

III. Curse on unbelief and blessing on faith (14:10-25)

As people were about to stone Joshua and Caleb, the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting. It was God’s message to them, which meant, “I am living. I am with you.” God said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?" (10-11) How did the Israelites treat God with contempt? They had seen many signs and they lived daily with God's sign. Every day, they ate manna from heaven and witnessed God's protection and guidance through a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire during the night. Nevertheless they did not believe in God. We wonder how the Israelites in Moses' time and the Jews in Jesus' time could be so unbelieving. How about us? Do we remember God's deliverance that enabled our own exodus from slavery to sin and death? Do we realize God's provision and nourishment every day? Do we feel the protection and guidance of the Holy Spirit 24 hours a day? We must become believing people through all these. We must live as God's children who feel God every moment and thank Him and confess our love for Him every day.

God wanted to destroy the Israelites with a plague and raise a new people through Moses. But Moses prayed for the sake of God's name and of his people. He pleaded with God to forgive them just as God had forgiven them in accordance with His great love. (12-19) Moses' prayer reminds us of the Lord Jesus' prayer on the cross for our forgiveness. His prayer also teaches us about how to serve and pray for God's flock of sheep under our care. Indeed God heard Moses' prayer and forgave his people. But God said that not one of those who treated Him with contempt by disobeying Him and testing Him would ever see the promised land (21-23). God led them back to the wilderness and let them wander for 40 years until all who were 20 years and older and who disobeyed God perished. It was the longest funeral procession in history. Those who died in the wilderness can be compared to those who remain in the life of flesh until they die, failing to enter into spiritual life. They fail to enter the abundant life, the life led by the Spirit and the life that bears fruit that lasts-- because they do not know the value of spiritual life and avoid the spiritual warfare with their old selves.

Read verse 24. "But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it." The land Caleb went to was the hill country of Hebron. There lived the Anakites, the giants (Jos 14:12). God was pleased with Caleb and promised that God would bring him into the land and his descendants would inherit it. God said, "my servant Caleb has a different spirit." Why could Caleb have a different spirit? God did not say, "he is a man of faith" or "he is brave." God said, "he follows me wholeheartedly." Here "wholeheartedly" means to fill a vacuum with something completely. Caleb filled his soul with God only. He did not allow anything else to occupy his heart along with God. He gave his whole heart to God and served God's will wholeheartedly. Here we learn what kind of person God seeks. God does not seek able men. God seeks men and women whose hearts are wholly devoted to Him.

Caleb loved God with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength (Dt 6:5). God loved him and was pleased to dwell in him and wanted to bless him and his descendants. Verse 32:12 says that Joshua also followed God wholeheartedly. Later Caleb, at the age of 85, inherited the hill country of Hebron after conquering the Anakites, as God blessed him. Joshua led the new generation of Israel and conquered the land which he had seen and believed he would enter. God leads those who follow Him wholeheartedly to the promised land and gives it to their descendants.

God chose us as well, and showed us his great love and power of salvation. We devoted ourselves to God our Creator and Redeemer. Only God can make our life truly meaningful, fruitful, and abundant. Only God is our eternal reward, joy, and glory. May we give our whole hearts to God, discarding any vain things we hold on to. Let's go forward to the land God promised to us-- the spiritual world of true freedom, truth, and abundance. Let's pray that God's kingdom may come to the land God gave us-- our homes, Christian communities, and souls in the campuses in America and in the world.

약속의 땅을 정탐하라

민수기 13:1-14:25

“사람을 보내어 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 가나안 땅을 정탐하게 하되 그들의 조상의 가문 각 지파 중에서 지휘관된 자 한사람씩 보내라.”

새해는 저희 모임이 새로운 50년으로 나아가는 첫 해입니다. 저는 두 가지 면에서 저희에게 주신 약속의 땅을 사랑하는 동역자들과 함께 생각해 보고자 합니다. 첫째는 저희 모임에 주신 한국과 세계의 캠퍼스 사역이요, 둘째는 저희 각자와 공동체에 약속하신 영의 세계입니다. 저희 모임의 태동기로 부터 성령께서 저희에게 주신 비젼은 세계선교 였습니다. 저는 이것이 저희에게 두신 하나님의 소망이며 약속이라고 믿습니다. 시대가 어렵다고 해서 하나님의 역사는 중단되지 않습니다. 우리는 선지자적 신앙과 비젼을 가지고 이 시대와 세계를 섬기도록 부름받았습니다. 하나님께서 저희의 눈을 열어 약속의 땅을 바라보게 하시고 갈렙과 여호수아의 믿음과 정신을 주시기를 기도합니다.

또한 저희 개인과 공동체에 그리스도 안에서 주신 영적 세계의 약속의 땅이 있습니다.  이는 하나님의 영을 좆는 새 사람들로서 풍성하고도 충만한 삶을 누리는 것입니다. 또한 저희의 공동체 안에 하나님의 나라가 암하여 세상의 빛이 되는 것입니다. 성령께서 저희의 마음을 새롭게 하시고 그가 인도하는 영의 세계로 나가게 하시기를 기도합니다.

I.가나안 땅을 정탐케 하신 하나님 (13:1-25)

민수기는 이스라엘 백성의 출애굽 1년 1개월 후 시내산에서 전쟁에 나갈 만한 백성의 수를 계수하는 것으로 시작합니다. 그간 이스라엘 백성은 율법을 받고 하나님과 언약을 맺고 그들의 범죄에도 불구하고 용서를 받고 성막을 중심으로 하나님과 교제하는 특별한 백성이 되었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그들에게 주시고자 하는 땅은 무주공산 무릉도원이 아니었습니다. 그들이 싸워 쟁취해야 할 땅이었습니다. 하나님은 그들을 가나안 땅이 바라다 보이는 바란 광야로 인도하시고 모세에게 말씀하셨습니다. “사람을 보내어 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 가나안 땅을 정탐하게 하되 그들의 조상의 가문 각 지파 중에서 지휘관된 자 한사람씩 보내라” (2). 신명기 1장 20-23절에는 백성들이 정탐을 제의하고 모세가 이를 좋게 여겨 정탐자들을 보낸 것으로 되어 있습니다. 아마도 백성들의 제안에 모세가 하나님께 기도했고 하나님께서 이를 허락하신 것으로 생각됩니다. 그런데 본문 1-3절은 정탐이 하나님의 명으로 이루어진 것을 강조하고 있습니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 믿음으로 모든 것을 하기를 원하시지만 상황을 모르고 전술 전략도 없이 가미가제식으로 일하기를 원치 읺으십니다. 성경의 후기 전쟁 기록을 보면  하나님께서 정탐케 하시고 전술을 지시해 주시고 이를 순종해 승리한 기록이 많습니다. 적정을 정탐하는 것은 군사작전에 앞서 기본적인 것입니다. 손자병법의 모공편에 “지피지기 백전불태 부지피이지기 일승일부 부지피부지기 매전필패” 라는 말이 있습니다. 적을 알고 나를 알면 백번 싸워 위태롭지 않고, 적을 모르고 나를 알면 한번 이기고 한번 지며, 적을 모르고 나를 모르면 매번 반드시 진다는 뜻입니다. 그런데 손자가 몰랐던 것이 있습니다. “전쟁은 여호와께 속한 것”입니다 (삼상 17:47). 또한 영적인 눈을 가질 때 진정으로 적을 알고 나를 알 수 있는 것입니다.

하나님은 모세를 통하여 거듭 “내가 이스라엘 백성에게 주는 땅” 또는 “내가 이 백성에게 주기로 맹세한 땅” 이라고 하셨습니다 (13:2, 14:16, 23, 30, 15:2). 하나님께서는 그의 백성이 그 땅의 아름다움을 보고 하나님께 감사하고 그 땅을 온전히 차지하고자 하는 의욕을 가지고 정복전쟁에 임하도록 격려하고자 하셨을 것입니다. 모세가 정탐군들을 보내면서 “담대하라” (20) 한마디를 주었습니다. 그들이 하나님의 약속을 마음에 새기면서 믿음으로 그 땅을 밟고 오기를 바랐을 것입니다. 정탐 명령은 일찌기 하나님께서 아브라함에게 하신 말씀을 생각하게 합니다. “너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 동서남북을 바라보라. 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라…..너는 일어나 그 땅을 종과 횡으로 두루다녀 보라. 내가 그것을 네게 주리라.” (창 13:14-17)

하나님은 우리가 우리에게 주고자 하시는 땅을 바라보고 정탐하기를 원하십니다. 그 땅을 믿음으로 밟고 마음 속에 소유하기를 원하십니다. 물론 그 땅은 우상숭배하는 강력한 원수들과 타락한 세속문화로 가득 차 있는 곳입니다. 하나님께서는 저희가 이들을 정복하고 그 땅을 소유함으로 그 땅에 하나님 나라가 임하기를 원하십니다. 우리는 전쟁을 원치 않습니다. 그러나 영적으로 세상은 전쟁 중에 있고 이 전쟁은 주님의 오시는 날 까지 계속될 것입니다. 우리 선교사, 목자님들은 하나님의 군대의 지휘관들입니다. 하나님께서 그의 백성의 지휘관들을 정탐군들로 보내신 것을 주목해야 합니다. 지휘관의 신념과 정신은 부대의 성패를 결정하는 가장 중요한 요소입니다. 우리에게 주신 정복해야 할 땅이 무엇입니까? 먼저 우리가 사역하고 있는 캠퍼스들입니다. 가정과 직장도 우리에게 주신 땅입니다. 지난 50년간 하나님께서 저희 모임이 91개국에1,800 여명의 선교사를 파송한 큰 모임으로 성장토록 축복하셨습니다. 그러나 91개 국 중  64%가 1개 지부에 의해 개척 단계에 있습니다. 가장 많은 선교사들이 사역하고 있는 미국과 독일에서도 주요 캠퍼스들의 25%만이 개척된 상태입니다. 또 저희 앞에는 아직 UBF선교사를 기다리고 있는 140여개 국이 있습니다. 우리가 사역하고 있는 나라에도 많은 도시들과 캠퍼스들이UBF목자들을 기다리고 있습니다.  하나님께서는 우리가 눈을 들어 약속의 땅을 새로운 믿음으로 바라보고 정복해 가기를 원하십니다.

내적으로 우리가 바라보아야 할 약속의 땅은 영적 성숙입니다. 저희를 그리스도의 형상으로 회복하는 것이 저희를 구원하신 하나님의 목적입니다 (롬 8:28-29). 이를 위해 저희에게 하나님의 말씀과 성령을 주시고 저희의 생애에 모든 것을 통하여 역사하십니다. 그리스도의 형상은 옛 사람, 곧 죄의 본성과의 끊임없는 전쟁을 통하여 형성됩니다. 하나님께 순종함으로 우리 안에서 옛사람이 죽을 때, 우리는 새 사람, 영의 사람이 됩니다. 우리는 자신의 영성이 어디까지 이르렀는지 점검해 보아야 합니다. 그리고 사도 바울과 같이 그리스도의 십자가와 부활의 길을 따름으로 그와 연합되기 위하여 달려가야 합니다 (빌 3:10-12). 저희 안에 옛사람이 죽기 위하여 때로는 자신과의 피흘리는영적 투쟁이 필요합니다. 옛 사람이 죽는 순간 부활의 능력을 체험하게 되고 참 자유를 얻게 됩니다. 미국에서 제가 도왔던 한 리더가 어느날 밤 찾아와서 말했습니다. “나는 포르노 보는 습관을 끊고자 수십 번을 결단했지만 끊을 수가 없습니다.” 성령께서 저희에게 에베소서 4장 22-24절 말씀을 주셨습니다. “너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어버리고 오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라.” 그가 유혹을 끊을 수 없었던 것은 정욕을 사랑하는 그의 옛 사람을 벗지 못한 데 있었습니다. 그는 그 밤에 하나님보다도 정욕을 사랑했던 자신의 죄악을 눈물로 회개했고 자신의 마음을 하나님께 온전히 드렸습니다. 그 순간 부터 그는 그 습관에서 온전한 자유함을 얻었습니다.

교만, 자기 영광, 정욕 등은 뿌리가 깊습니다. 이들을 뽑아내려면 포클레인과 다이너마이트가 필요합니다. 우리가 거룩한 말씀의 포클레인으로 마음 속 깊은 곳 까지 파서 죄악을드러내고 하나님 앞에서 진실되이 회개할 때 성령께서 그의 능력의 다이너마이트로 그 죄의 뿌리를 날려버리시고 겸손하고 순결한 새 사람이 되게 하십니다. 영의 사람이요 하나님 중심의 사람이 될 때 주님께서 신자들에게 약속하신 풍성한 삶, 충만한 삶 속으로 들어가게 됩니다 (요 10:10).  우리가 섬기는 센타와 우리 모임의 공동체에도 하나님의 나라가 온전히 임하기까지 사랑과 의에서 계속해서 자라야 합니다.  우리가 “ 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라” (요 13:34) 는 주님의 새 계명을 순종할 때 우리가운데 하나님의 나라가 온전히 임하게 됩니다.  우리 목자님들 사모님들은 얼마나 아름다운 믿음의 형제 자매들입니까? 이제까지 우리는 사역에 전심하다 보니 세상에서 얻을 수 없는 믿음의 동료들, 하나님께서 영원 전부터 예정하시고 불러 함께 일하게 하신 영적 가족들 간의 아름다운 사랑의 교제를 누리지 못하고 살아온 것 같습니다. 힘든 목자 생활 속에서 동지들과의 사랑의 교제는 피곤을 씻어 주고 격려와 용기를 얻는 청량제가 됩니다. 이제 서로를 돌아보며 아름다운 사랑의 공동체를 만들어 갑시다.

3장 4-15절에 정탐조로 뽑힌 열 두 두령의 이름들이 기록되어 있습니다.  우리의 이름들도 하나님 나라의 역사책에 영원히 기록될 것입니다. 하나님의 역사에 선택을 받는 것은 큰 은혜가 아닐 수 없습니다. 이 은혜를 갈렙과 호세아와 같이 믿음과 순종으로 잘 감당해야 합니다. 모세는 호세아 (구원)를 여호수아 (여호와는 구원이시다)로 개명해 주었습니다 (16). 모세는 하나님께서 여호수아를 다음 세대의 지도자로 세우실 것을 예견하고 그가 하나님을 더 생각하고 굳게 의지하도록 도운 것 같습니다.

II.정탐 보고 (13:26-14:9)

정탐자들은 40일 동안 남북으로 400여 킬로미터에 이르는 땅을 정탐하고 포도 송이를 막대기에 꿰어 메고 돌아왔습니다. 이를 본 백성들이 “와! 저 왕포도알 좀 봐. 골프공만 해!” 하며 즐거워 했습니다. 그들이 모세에게 말했습니다. “당신이 우리를 보낸 땅에 간즉 과연 그 땅에 젖과 꿀이 흐르는데 이것은 그 땅의 과일이니이다.​​​​​​​” 군중들 가운데 환성과 박수가 터졌을 것입니다. 그러나 그들이 “그러나 그 땅 거주민은 강하고 성읍은 견고하고 심히 클 뿐 아니라 거기서 아낙 자손을 보았으며…​​​​​​​” 하자 분위기가 가라앉았습니다. 아낙 자손은 특별주문해야만 옷입고 신발 신을 수 있는 거인족이었습니다. 후에 소년 다윗과 싸운 골리앗도 해안지대로 쫒겨간 아낙 자손으로 보고 있습니다.

백성들이 동요하자 갈렙이 앞에 나서 그들을 안돈시키며 말했습니다. “우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자. 능히 이기리라​​​​​​​” (30). 그러나 그와 함께 갔던 다른 열 두령들은 “우리는 능히 올라가서 그 백성을 치지 못하리라. 그들은 우리보다 강하니라.​​​​​​​” 하고, 그 탐지한 땅을 악평하기 시작했습니다. “우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 그 거주민을 삼키는 땅이요 거기서 본 모든 백성은 신장이 장대한 자들이며 거기서  네피림 후손인 아낙 자손의 거인들을 보았나니 우리는 스스로 보기에도 메뚜기 같으니 그들의 보기에도 그와 같았을 것이니라​​​​​​​” (31-33). 여기서 악평하였다는 것은 거짓으로 무함하여 위증하는 것을 말합니다. 그들의 말 대로 그 땅이 “그 거주민을 삼키는 땅” 이라면 그 땅 사람들이 모두 죽었던지 살아 있어도 모두 비실비실 해야 할 것 아닙니까? 또 “모든 백성은 신장이 장대한 자들” 이라는 것도 과장입니다. 그리고 자기들이 메뚜기 같다는 것은 또 뭡니까? 열 두령들은 무서운 적들 앞에서 메뚜기처럼 이리 저리 튀다가 잡혀 먹히는 자신들의 비참한 상상을 하며 두려워 했습니다.

이들의 문제가 무엇입니까? 이들의 안목과 생각과 말에서 하나님이 계시지 않았습니다. 갈렙, 여호수아, 그리고 열 두령은 같이 출애굽했고 같이 하나님의 권능과 성품과 인도하심을 체험했습니다. 그런데 왜 열 두령은 갈렙과 여호수아가 가진 영성을 소유할 수 없었을까요? 그것은 사도 바울이 고린도전서 3장 1절에서 말한 바 신령한 세계로 나가는 사람과 육신에 속한 상태로 남아있는 사람이 있는것과 같습니다. 무엇이 영적 성장을 결정할까요? 하나님을 경외하고 순종하는 자세일 것입니다. 하나님을 경외하고 그 앞에 사는 사람은 모든 일에서 하나님을 느끼고 배우며 성장합니다. 반면 사람 앞에 살고 모든 일을 인간적으로만 보는 사람은 영적인 성장을 할 수 없습니다. 열 지휘관이 단지 육신의 눈으로 가나안 땅을 보았을 때 견고한 성들과 부유하고 건장하고 잘 무장된 강력한 적들 만이 보였습니다. 한편 애굽에서의 노예생활로 인해  왜소하고 약하게 된 자신들의 신체조건과 무장도 없고 훈련도 안된 자신들의 형편 만이 보였습니다. 그들은 자포자기하였고 자신들을 변명하기 위해 그 땅을 악평하였습니다. 갈렙은 다른 열 지휘관이 본 것과 똑같은 것을 보았습니다. 그러나 그는 그의 안에 거하시는 성령을 통해서 그 땅을 하나님의 눈으로 볼 수 있었습니다. 하나님의 눈으로 보았을 때 그 땅의 거민들은 하나님의 심판 아래 멸망을 앞두고 있는 사형수들로 보였고 하나님께서 그의 백성을 심판의 도구로 쓰시고 약속의 땅을 주실 것을 확신할 수 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 “우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라”고 말했습니다.

우리는 포스트 모던 시대의 인본 사상, 물질주의와 쾌락주의와 싸우고 있습니다. 영적 소원이 없는 세대들을 피싱하는 것 부터 제자양성 하는 것 까지 우리의 힘으로는 마치 거인족들과 싸우는 것 같습니다. 육신의 눈으로 주신 땅을 바라보면 우리는 부정적인 생각과 두려움에 잡히게 되고 자신을 왜소하게 느끼게 됩니다. 우리는 약하나 우리의 하나님은 강하십니다. 하나님은 참으로 크십니다. 우리가 믿음과 순종하는 겸손함으로 하나님을 바라볼 때 전능하신 하나님이 우리의 심령에 점점 커지게 되고 모든 문제들이 작아지다가 사라지게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님의 눈으로 주신 땅을 바라보게 될 때 성령께서 우리 심령에 “우리가 능히 이기고 정복하리라”는 용기와 확신을 주십니다.

열 두령의 두려움에 찬 보고를 들은 백성은 소리높여 부르짖으며 밤새도록 곡하였습니다. 하나님의 불기둥이 비춰주는 불빛 아래서 200만명이 앉아 통곡하고 있는 모습을 상상해 보십시오. 불신이 얼마나 큰 비극인지 보여주는 장면입니다.  온 회중이 모세와 아론을 원망하며 말했습니다. “우리가 애굽 땅에서 죽었거나 이 광야에서 죽었으면 좋았을 것을 어찌하여 여호와가 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 칼에 쓰러지게 하려 하는고. 우리 처자가 사로잡히리니 애굽으로 돌아가는 것이 낫지 아니하랴” (14:1-3). “우리가 애굽 땅에서 죽었더면 좋았을 것을…”—이는 이스라엘 백성의 상습적인 원망이었습니다 (출 14:11, 16:3, 민 20:3). 이는 그들을 비참한 노예생활에서 구원하신 하나님의 은혜를 멸시하는 배은망덕의 죄악이었습니다. 우리가 다른 모든 것을 잊더라도 하나님의 구원의 은혜를 잊어서는 안됩니다. 그들은 심지어 애굽으로 돌아가는 것이 낫다고 생각했습니다. 안정만 보장된다면 옛 노예생활로 돌아가겠다는 것입니다. 이들은 하나님이 주신 자유와 하나님을 섬기는 특권의 의미를 알지 못했습니다. 영적 축복에는 희생이 따릅니다. 영적 축복의 의미를 알 때 기꺼이 희생할 수 있고 모든 어려움을 감사함으로 극복할 수 있습니다. 또 어떠한 역경 속에서도 하늘로 부터 오는 평화와 기쁨을 소유할 수 있습니다. 영적 축복의 의미를 아는 사람 만이 그 축복 속으로 들어갈 수 있습니다. 생활의 안정을 우선에 두는 사람은 결코 영적인 약속의 땅에 들어갈 수 없습니다.

믿음없는 백성들은 급기야 한 장관을 세워 애굽으로 돌아가고자 반역하였습니다. 이에 모세와 아론이 이스라엘 회중 앞에 엎드렸습니다. (4-5) 백성들에게 임할 하나님의 진노를 느끼며 두려워 하나님 앞에 엎드렸을 것입니다. 그 때 그 땅을 탐지한 자 중 여호수아와 갈렙이 그 옷을 찢고 온 회중에게 외쳤습니다. “우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 심히 아름다운 땅이라. 여호와께서 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 들이시고 그 땅을 우리에게 주시리라. 이는 과연 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이니라. 오직 여호와를 거역하지는 말라. 또 그 백성을 두려워하지 말라. 그들은 우리의 먹이라. 그들의 보호자는 그들에게서 떠났고 여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라. 그들을 두려워 말라.” (7-9) 고대에는 옷이 귀했습니다. 따라서 옷을 북 찢는다는 것은 큰 결단이고 큰 슬픔과 의분을  나타내는 것입니다. 모세의 수종자인 여호수아가 처음 부터 갈렙을 동조하지 않고 이 때 나선 것은 갈렙의 말에 신뢰성을 더하게 하려한 사려 깊은 행동이었다고 생각합니다. 여호수아와 갈렙에게서 무엇을 배울 수 있습니까?

첫째, 하나님의 약속을 믿는 믿음입니다. 여호수아와 갈렙이 가나안 정복에 대한 확신을 가졌던 것은 그들이 하나님의 약속을 믿었기 때문입니다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 가나안 땅을 그의 후손에게 주시겠다고 말씀하셨고, 그들이 애굽에서 노예생활할 것과 출애굽할 것과 가나안으로의 귀환을 예언하셨습니다 (창 15:7-21). 하나님은 이삭과 야곱에게 이 약속을 확언하셨고 수백년 후 모세에게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 내려가서 그들을 애굽인의 손에서 건져내고 그들을 그 땅에서 인도하여 아름답고 광대한 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅 곧 가나안 족속, 헷 족속, 아모리 족속, 브리스 족속, 히위 족속, 여부스 족속의 지방에 데려가려 하노라” (출 3:8). 하나님은 반드시 그 말씀을 이루십니다. 믿음은 하나님의 약속에 대한 전적인 신뢰, 곧 100%의 신뢰입니다. 70%, 90%, 99% 신뢰 까지도 믿음이 아닙니다. 여호수아와 갈렙에게는 하나님의 약속에 대한 100% 신뢰가 있었습니다. 그들의 믿음은 하나님 자신에 대한 전적인 신뢰에서 온 것입니다. 우리에게는 주님의 약속이 있습니다. “그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라. 볼지어다. 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라“ (마 28:19-20). 우리가 주님의 이 약속을 100% 신뢰할 때 어떤 역경 속에서도 용기와 확신을 가지고 도전하여 주님의 영광을 나타낼 수 있습니다.

둘째, 하나님의 주권과 권능에 대한 믿음입니다. 여호수아와 갈렙은 ”여호와께서 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 들이시고 그 땅을 우리에게 주시리라.”고 말했습니다. 그들에게 그 땅의 강한 거민이 문제가 아니었습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 그의 백성을 그 땅으로 인도해 들이시면 아무도 하나님의 하시는 일을 막을 수 없기 때문입니다. 전능하신 하나님, 만유의 주재이신 하나님께서 하시면 안될 것이 없습니다. 우리는 이를 믿고 일해야 합니다. 사람들이 안된다고 말할 때 우리는 “하나님께서는 능히 하신다”고 말할 수 있습니다. 여호수아와 갈렙은 약속을 받기 위해서 단지 하나님을 기쁘시게 해야 한다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 우리가 어떻게 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 있습니까? 우리가 하나님을 온전히 믿음으로 그를 기쁘시게 할 수 있습니다 (히 11:6). 하나님은 우리의 순종과 헌신과 목자의 심정을 기뻐 받으십니다. 우리는 우리 모임에 주신 10만 선교사 양성과 세계 주요 캠퍼스들의복음화를 위해 믿음으로 기도해야 합니다. 한국 모든 주요 캠퍼스들의 개척을 믿고 기도해야 합니다. 우리 목자님들과 선교사님들 중에 하나님을 영화롭게 하고자 믿음으로 일하여 하나님의 능력과 신실하심을 체험하고 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 많은 종들이 있습니다. 저는 이런 믿음의 종들을 일으키신 하나님께 찬양과 감사를 드립니다. 우리가 하나님을 기쁘시게 하면 하나님께서 우리를 약속의 땅으로 인도해 들이시고 그 땅을 우리와 우리 후손에게 주실 것입니다.

셋째, 영적 싸움에서의 승리입니다. 여호수아와 갈렙은 “그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 말라. 그들은 우리의 먹이라” 외쳤습니다. 여기서 “먹이”라는 명사는 빵, 고기,과일 등의 음식을 가리킵니다. 여호수아와 갈렙의 눈에는 그 땅의 거민들이 맛있는 불고기나 피자같이 보였습니다. 영어 성경에는 “we will swallow them up” 또는 “we will devour them”이라고 번역되었습니다. 그들을 “삼켜 버리겠다,” “먹어 치우겠다”는 것입니다. 대단한 식욕, 정복욕, 자신감이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그들이 그 땅 거민들을 먹이로 본 것은 그들의 보호자인 우상들, 잡귀들이 하나님의 임재 앞에 모두 도망갔고 여호와는 이스라엘과 함께 하고 계신 것을 믿었기 때문입니다. 이들의 모습은 “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고…” 하신 주님의 약속을 생각하게 합니다 (행 1:8). 이들이 성령 충만했던 것은 믿음으로 사탄이 주는 두려움과 의심의 화살을 막고 깨뜨린 데 있습니다. 우리가 하나님의 권능을 덧입기 위해서는 먼저 사탄과의 영적인 전투에서 믿음으로 승리해야 합니다. 사탄은 우리가 무슨 일을 하려고 하면 두려움과 의심의 독화살을 우리 마음에 쏘아 댑니다. 이 독화살에 맞게 되면 의욕과 기력을 잃고 원망과 슬픈 생각을 하게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님의 역사를 섬기는 일선 지휘관으로서 항상 해야할 일은 하나님의 약속인 말씀을 굳게 붙들고 깨어 기도함으로 사탄과의 사상전에서 승리하는 것입니다. 캠퍼스와 양들 안에 역사하는 인본주의, 물질주의, 쾌락 등의 잡귀들은 성령께서 역사하실 때 도망갑니다. 에베소서 6장 16절은 말씀합니다. “모든 것 위에 믿음의 방패를 가지고 이로써 능히 악한 자의 모든 불화살을 소멸하고 구원의 투구와 성령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀을 가지라.” 사탄을 물리치고 성령의 충만함을 받을 때 우리는 하나님이 주시는 의욕과 비젼에 불타게 되고 하나님의 능력으로 일하게 됩니다.

여호수아와 갈렙은 백성들에게 “여호와를 거역하지 말라”고 경고했습니다. 이 말씀에 기초해 볼 때 하나님을 불신하고 약속의 땅을 포기하는 것이 하나님을 거역하는 것입니다. 불신은 실패와 수치와 멸망으로 인도하는 뒷길이요, 믿음은 승리와 영광과 영생으로 인도하는 앞길입니다. 우리에게는 물러설 뒷길이 없습니다. 성령께서는 오직 약속의 땅으로 향하는 앞길 만을 가리키고 계십니다. 두려워 하지 맙시다. 역사가 안된다고 실망하지 맙시다. 우리가 마음과 성품과 힘을 다해 하나님을 사랑하고 오늘 해야할 일을 담대한 믿음으로 하면 됩니다. 우리에게 주시는 제자들과 자녀들을 믿음과 영의 사람들로 키우면 됩니다. 하나님께서 우리와 함께 일하시고 우리를 통해 두신 뜻을 자신의 방법으로 자신의 때에 이루어 가실 것입니다.

III.불신에 대한 징계와 믿음에 대한 축복 (14:10-25)

백성들이 여호수아와 갈렙을 돌로 치려할 때 여호와의 영광이 회막에 나타났습니다. 하나님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨습니다. “이 백성이 어느 때까지 나를 멸시하겠느냐. 내가 그들 중에 많은 이적을 행하였으나 어느 때까지 나를 믿지 않겠느냐?” (14:10-11) 이스라엘 백성은 어떻게 하나님을 멸시했습니까? 그들은 수 많은 하나님의 이적을 체험했고 매일 하나님의 이적 가운데 살았습니다. 그들은 매일 하늘에서 내려준 양식인 만나를 먹었고 낮에는 구름 기둥으로 밤에는 불 기둥으로 인도하시는 하나님을 목도했습니다. 그런데도 그들은 하나님을 믿지 읺았습니다. 우리는 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성이나 주님의 지상 사역 동안의 유대인들을 생각할 때 어떻게 사람들이 그렇게 믿지 않을 수 있는가 의아해 합니다. 오늘날 우리는 어떻습니까? 우리는 우리를 죄의 노예되었던 땅에서 출애굽 시키신 하나님의 그 이적을 기억합니까? 매일 하나님의 공급과 양육하심을 깨닫고 있습니까? 24시간 저희를 보호하시고 인도하시는 성령님을 느끼며 살고 있습니까? 우리는 이 모든 것을 통해서 하나님을 믿는 자들이 되어야 겠습니다. 매일 매 순간 하나님을 느끼고 감사하고 사랑을 고백하는 하나님의 자녀들이 되어야 겠습니다.

하나님은 전염병으로 이스라엘 회중을 멸하고 모세를 통해 새 백성을 일으키겠다고 하셨습니다. 그러나 모세는 하나님의 이름을 위하여 그의 백성을 위하여 기도했습니다. 그는 그 때 까지 그의 백성을 사하여 주셨던 것과 같이 주의 인자의 광대하심을 따라 사하여 달라고 간구했습니다. (12-19) 모세의 기도는 십자가 위해서 하신 주님의 기도를 생각하게 합니다. 또 저희들에게 목자로서 어떻게 양들을 섬기고 기도해야 하는지 가르쳐 줍니다. 과연 하나님께서 모세의 기도를 들으시고 백성의 죄악을 사하셨습니다. 그러나 하나님을 시험하고 순종치 아니한 자들은 약속의 땅을 결단코 보지 못하리라 말씀하셨습니다. (20-23) 하나님은 그들을 광야로 돌이켜 20세 이상으로 하나님을 원망한 모두가 죽기까지 40년 간을 광야에서 유리하게 하셨습니다. 역사상 가장 긴 장례 행렬이었습니다. 광야에서 죽은 이들은 영적 세계에 들어가지 못하고 일생을 육신적 삶을 살다가 죽는 사람들에 비할 수 있습니다. 이들은 하나님이 주시고자 하시는 영적 세계의 가치를 알지 못하고, 그 세계로 나가는 영적인 도전과 전투를 피하기 때문에  하나님이 약속하신 풍성하고도 충만한 삶, 영을 따라 사는 새 사람, 영원한 열매를 맺는 삶으로 들어가지 못하는 것입니다.

24절을 읽겠습니다. “그러나 내 종 갈렙은 그 마음이 그들과 달라서 나를 온전히 따랐은즉 그의 갔던 땅으로 내가 그를 인도하여 들이리니 그의 자손이 그 땅을 차지하리라.” 갈렙이 갔던 땅은 예루살렘 남방의 헤브론 산지였습니다. 그 땅의 성읍들은 크고 견고하며 그곳에는 거인들이 살고 있었습니다 (수 14:12). 하나님께서는 갈렙을 기뻐하시고 그를 그가 보았던 땅으로 인도해 들이실 것이며 그 자손이 그 땅을 차지할 것이라고 축복하셨습니다. 하나님은 “내 종 갈렙은 그 마음이 그들과 달라서 나를 온전히 따랐다”고 말씀하셨습니다. NIV 영어 성경에 “my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly”로 번역되었습니다. 왜 갈렙은 다른 마음, 곧다른spirit을 가질 수 있었을까요? 하나님께서는 그가 “나를 온전히 따랐다”고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 그가 “용감하였다”든지, 그가 “믿음의 사람이었다”고 하지 않으시고 그가 “나를 온전히 따랐다”고 하셨습니다. 여기서 “온전히” 라는 말은 빈 것을 100% 가득히 채우는 것을 의미합니다. 갈렙은 마음 (heart)을 온전히 하나님으로 만채운 사람이었습니다. 그는 다른 것이 그의 마음에 들어오는 것을 용납하지 않았습니다.  그는 전심으로 하나님의 뜻과 소원을 이루어 드리고자 했습니다. 여기서 우리는 하나님이 어떤 사람을 찾으시는가 알 수 있습니다. 하나님이 찾으시는 사람은 능력이 많은 사람이 아닙니다. 하나님은 온 마음으로 하나님을 사랑하고 의지하는 사람, 곧 헌신된 사람을 찾으십니다.

갈렙은 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 하나님을 사랑한 사람이었습니다 (신 6:5). 하나님께서도 그를 사랑하셨고 그 안에 계시기를 기뻐하셨으며 그와 그 자손을 축복하기 원하셨습니다. 32장 12절에는 여호수아도 갈렙과 같이 하나님을 “온전히 따랐다” 고 말씀합니다. 후에 갈렙은 하나님께서 축복하신 대로 85세의 나이에 아낙 자손을 쳐서 정복하고 헤브론 산지를 유업으로 받게 됩니다. 여호수아는 이스라엘의 새 세대의 지도자가 되어 자신이 보았고 들어가리라고 믿었던 땅을 정복하게 됩니다. 하나님은 자기를 온전히 좆는 자들을 약속의 땅으로 인도해 들이시고 그 자손을 축복하십니다.

하나님께서 저희를 부르셨고 그 놀라운 사랑과 구원의 권능을 베푸셨으며 저희는 저희의 창조주시며 구주이신 하나님께 헌신했습니다. 하나님 만이 저희의 인생을 진정으로 가치있게 하시며, 열매있게 하시며, 풍성하게 하시며, 충만하게 하실 수 있습니다.  하나님 만이 저희의 영원한 상급이시며, 기쁨이시며, 영광이십니다. 모든 헛된 것들을 내려 놓고 오직 하나님께 우리의 마음과 영혼을 드립시다. 그리고 그가 우리 각 자에게 약속하신 땅—참 자유와 하나님의 사랑과 진리의 세계, 영의 인도함을 받는 세계로 나아갑시다. 또한 우리에게 정복하도록 주신 땅—가정과 믿음의 공동체와 한국과 세계의 캠퍼스 영혼들--에 하나님의 나라가 임하도록 기도합시다.
