Jesus Predicts his Death

Matthew 20:17-19

Key verse 20:18

“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death…”

Read verse 17.  Where was Jesus going?  Who did he take aside?  Why do you think Jesus spoke privately to the twelve disciples?

Read verse 18.  Why was Jesus going to Jerusalem?  Who would betray Jesus?  How might have Jesus felt to be betrayed by one of his disciples?  How might have he felt to be condemned by the religious leaders?  Are there any examples in your own life to help you understand how Jesus might have felt?

Read verse 19.  What three things did Jesus suffer under the gentiles?  Why do you think Jesus’ death included such terrible sufferings?  Yet, what would be the end result of his sufferings and death?  What does Jesus’ death mean for us?  How should be view suffering to do what is right?
