1 My heart is not proud,(A)Lord, my eyes are not haughty;(B) I do not concern myself with great matters(C) or things too wonderful for me.(D) 2 But I have calmed and quieted myself,(E) I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.(F)
3 Israel, put your hope(G) in the Lord both now and forevermore.(H)
Our purpose as human beings is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. But when our hearts are full of pride and ambition, we have no joy in God. We are seeking joy in something else. God trains his people. He performs surgery on our pride and teaches us how to rest in him alone.
2. Like a weaned child (2-3)
The time comes when a mother must wean her child. At first, he cries and demands his mother's breast. But she must curb his demands and teach him that he cannot have everything he wants. When he accepts this, he is weaned, and he becomes quiet. He sees things differently. He can rest peacefully with his mother, enjoying her love. God wants us to surrender our pride and passion and put our hope in him. He wants to give us his deep peace and to teach us to enjoy fellowship with him.
Prayer: Lord, I don't want to be driven by pride and passion; teach me to wait on you and rest in you so that I may have your peace in my soul.
