JESUS BRINGS DIVISION...AND PEACE

Passage: Luke 12:49~59

Key verse: 51

1. Not peace, but division (49-53)

The Jews hoped the Messiah would defeat Rome and bring world peace. Jesus didn't do this. Rather, to those who believe (2:14), Jesus brings peace with God (Ro 5:1). The gospel is a fire that actually brings division between those who are for Jesus and those who are against him. Even parents are often divided against children on account of Jesus.

2. Interpret the time (54-56)

It's easy to talk about comfortable topics like the weather, food, entertainment and money. But religion and politics cause division, so it's not polite to talk about these. It's hypocritical to show concern about people, but not talk about God, Jesus, sin and eternal life.

3. Be reconciled (57-59)

In cases of debt, the guilty debtor must pay or go to jail. It's better to reconcile with enemies before going to court. This could mean giving reparations or an apology. We are guilty sinners, who must be reconciled to God. Jesus came to reconcile us to God (2Co 5:20).

Prayer: Lord, help me not to pursue peace in my own way but in the way you have provided in Christ, even though it will mean division.

One Word: Jesus brings division, and peace with God
