FOR THE LORD OR FOR GIDEON?

Passage: Judges 8:1~21

Key verse: 3

1. Gideon's compliment (1-3)

The Ephraimites challenged Gideon for not calling them from the start of the battle. Actually, to call them at all into the fighting was not God's directive. Gideon did not explain that God wanted to send him against Midian with only 300 men. Rather he complimented them for capturing two Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. Then their resentment subsided. Even so, we must be careful not to do what we think is best and regard it as God's will. We should humbly keep praying and seeking God's will.

2. Gideon's curses and revenge

(4-21)

Gideon was not as gracious to the men of Sukkoth and Peniel. When they refused to feed Gideon's troops, doubting he would win the battle, he threatened to tear their flesh with thorns and to tear down their tower. Gideon did prevail and fulfilled his threats. Gideon executed Zebah and Zalmunna for killing his own brothers. There is little mention of the Lord and his guidance in this passage. The words "...and for Gideon" (7:18) were not wise or humble for a servant of God. Still, God used him.

Prayer: Lord, forgive my prideful ways of doing what I think is best. Help me to humbly keep seeking your will.

One Word: Humbly follow God's word and will
