HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD
Passage: Isaiah 39:1~8
Key verse: 5
Envoys From Babylon(A)
39 At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon(B) sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of his illness and recovery. 2 Hezekiah received the envoys(C) gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold,(D) the spices, the fine olive oil—his entire armory and everything found among his treasures.(E) There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”
“From a distant land,(F)” Hezekiah replied. “They came to me from Babylon.”
4 The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?”
“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word(G) of the Lord Almighty: 6 The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon.(H) Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 7 And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.(I)”
8 “The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,(J)” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “There will be peace and security in my lifetime.(K)”

1. Hezekiah's pride (1-4)
After relief from national and personal crises, Hezekiah may have felt on top of the world. At that time, envoys from Babylon came with gifts and praise. This was a test from the LORD (2Chr 32:21) to reveal all the heart of the king. He happily received them, showing them everything in his kingdom. He may feel an alliance with them was good. Isaiah's questions revealed the senselessness of the king's action, but Hezekiah seemed so proud of what he had done.
2. God opposes the proud (5-8)
Isaiah then gave Hezekiah God's words. The result of this foolish act planted the seeds of Babylon's later invasion and conquering of Judah. At times of success, it is natural to become proud. Like Hezekiah, we need to hear the word of the Lord and be restored to our right mind. His initial response was proud (8), but later he repented (2Chr 32:26), and God's wrath was avoided.
Prayer: Father, you oppose the proud. Help me hear your word each day and be humble.
One Word: Don't be proud but humble
