THE ARK OF GOD IS CAPTURED

Passage: 1Samuel 4:2~22

Key verse: 22

1. War against the Philistines (1-11)

When the war with the Philistines was going poorly, the elders of Israel decided to bring the ark of the Lord to the battle. They wanted God to save them, but they didn't seek him in prayer. Instead they decided to bring the ark. For them it was less the ark of God and more a good luck charm. News of this brought fear into the Philistine camp. They knew the history of Israel, and how the Lord glorified himself by defeating the Egyptians. But they fought and won. The defeat was overwhelming, and Eli's sons were both casualties.

2. The glory has departed from Israel (12-22)

A messenger brought news of the battle back to Eli. Eli heard about the defeat and his own sons, but when he was told that the ark was captured he fell and broke his neck and died. Right then Eli's daughter-in-law gave birth to a son. She did not survive the delivery, but did so long enough to name the boy Ichabod, saying, "The Glory has departed from Israel." The life of God's people is bound up in his glory-not good luck.

Prayer: Lord, help me to depend only on you.

One Word: Seek God and his glory only
