THE LIMITATIONS OF DAVID'S KINGDOM

Passage: 2Samuel 21:1~22

Key verse: 3b

1. The problem of sin (1-14)

In many ways, David's kingdom was an exciting preview of the kingdom of Christ. David's kingdom had limitations, though, that stir up a longing for the perfect and eternal reign of Christ. The Lord sent famine to the land of Israel because of Saul's sin against the Gibeonites. His sin could no longer be ignored, but how could atonement be made? David sought the counsel of the Gibeonites and they asked for seven males from Saul's family to be killed and exposed before the Lord. This was a horrible task for David, but he did it. Rizpah, the mother of two of the men, stayed with the bodies to keep the birds and animals away until the Lord sent rain. David gave Saul, Jonathan, and the seven men a proper burial and then God answered their prayers again.

2. David became weak (15-22)

God performed mighty works through David's men. Following David's example, four of his men killed giants of their own. However, we begin to see how David's mortality was becoming an issue. He grew exhausted and could no longer go out to battle. The lamp of Israel was vulnerable. In contrast, the light of Christ shines forever. He never tires as he protects and intercedes for his people.

Prayer: Father, we see the horrible consequences of our sin. Thank you for Jesus who bore our sin on the cross.

One Word: Sin requires an atonement
