ABIJAH AND ASA, KINGS OF JUDAH

Passage: 1Kings 15:1~24

Key verse: 14

1. Abijah, King of Judah (1-8)

Abijah is contrasted here with King David. Abijah committed the same sins his father Rehoboam had committed. He wasn't like King David, who sought the Lord, and never failed to keep any of the Lord's commands. But the Lord blessed Abijah with a son to succeed him. The Lord did this because of David's faithfulness. The Lord is faithful to those who obey Him.

2. Asa, King of Judah (9-24)

Abijah's son Asa became king after Abijah died. When we read about the father's reign and the son's, there are similarities. They were both at war with the northern kingdom for their whole reigns. Where they differed was that Asa did what was right in the Lord's sight. He expelled the shrine prostitutes and got rid of the idols. He deposed his wicked grandmother as queen mother. His heart was fully committed to the Lord for his whole life. God judges by what is in our hearts. When our hearts are fully devoted to the Lord, He blesses us.

Prayer: Lord, raise up national leaders whose hearts are devoted to you.

One Word: Have a heart fully devoted to the Lord
