NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Passage: Deuteronomy 9:1~29

Key verse: 6

1. But on account of their wickedness (1-6)

God warned Israel not to become self-righteous. They would meet stronger enemies such as the giant Anakites who lived in large, walled cities. But God would destroy them like a devouring fire. On that day, they should not say to themselves, 'It was because of our righteousness.' God said, 'No, it was on account of the wickedness of these nations.' When God gives us victory, we should not be proud but remember God and glorify him only.

2. God heard Moses' prayers (7-29)

The people had been very stiff-necked. They made an idol in the shape of a calf and worshiped it. Only by Moses' sincere intercessory prayer God spared them and Aaron from destruction. Then they didn't take possession of the land God had given them. God was ready to destroy them again. But God heard Moses' prayer once more. We are worse than Israel. But God forgave us through the mediator Jesus. He died for our sins. He prayed, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'

Prayer: Lord, we have no righteousness to claim at all for our salvation. Thank you for saving us through Jesus who sacrificed himself for our sake.

One Word: Jesus, our only mediator
