THE PRIEST AND THE PROPHET

Passage: Deuteronomy 18:1~22

Key verse: 18

1. Offerings for priests and Levites (1-8)

The tribe of Levi was set aside by God, even before the Israelites had entered the Promised Land. He set them aside so that they would 'stand and administer in the LORD's name always' (5). Because the LORD set them aside as his own, they did not receive any land as their inheritance as all the other tribes did. Instead, the LORD was their inheritance. So, God commanded the other 11 tribes to help support the Levites by giving them the food offerings presented to the LORD.

2. The prophets (9-22)

The land the Israelites would enter was populated by people who did not know God. They were occultists, sorcerers, and those who practiced divination. The LORD commanded his people that they should not live like that. Instead, the LORD would send a prophet, a man after God's own heart, who would be full of God's spirit. He would give his prophets the words he was to speak, and they were to listen to him.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that you called us and made yourself as our inheritance. Help me to listen to your words always.

One Word: Listen to God's word
