VOWS AND DEDICATIONS

Passage: Leviticus 27:1~34

Key verse: 27:2

First, special vows and dedications to the Lord (1-25). This chapter involves special vows of dedication and their redemption values, both as thanks to God and to support the sanctuary and the priests. The offering for human life was valued economically according to labor power. Animals, houses or lands were also accepted offerings which then belonged to the priests. To buy back or redeem an offering required adding 20% of the value to it. Dedications belonged as something holy to the Lord, unless they were properly bought back. Second, the tithe belongs to God (26-34). Some things already belong to God, like the firstborn, since God redeemed them from death in Egypt. A tithe (one tenth) of everything belongs to the Lord. To redeem the tithe required the additional 20%.

Prayer: Lord, my life and possessions are ultimately not my own; these belong to you. I give of these to you freely, thankfully and generously.

One Word: A dedication offering to the Lord
