THE LORD'S DISCIPLINE

Passage: Deuteronomy 8:1~20

Key verse: 5

1. In order to know what was in your hearts (1-9)

God again commanded obedience. He had been leading the people for 40 years in the desert. It seemed like wandering without direction. In reality God was guiding them the whole time. It was hard, but it was God's discipline, causing them to hunger, then feeding them, humbling them and testing them. God was refining their hearts so that they could be a people of his word. He disciplined them out of his great love so that they would keep his commands after they had received abundant material blessings.

2. When you are satisfied, praise the Lord (10-20)

Bearing God's blessing is not easy. It is easier to forget God and think that we accomplished great things all by ourselves. Moses warned the people not to forget the Lord or worship other gods. When they were satisfied in the land they were about to receive, they must praise the Lord. All they have and all they are comes from the Lord. He is the source of all blessing. To forget him in the time of blessing only leads to destruction.

Prayer: Lord, help me to bear your discipline as your great love, and to praise you as my source of blessing..

One Word: Remember to praise the Lord
