A MISUNDERSTANDING CLEARED UP

Passage: Joshua 22:10~34

Key verse: 31

As the eastern tribes crossed the Jordan to return to their homes, they built an altar by the Jordan. They were determined to be faithful to God and set up an altar to testify of God’s faithfulness and their covenant commitment to Him. It would also remind them that they were to identify with the 12 tribes and express their unity with the Western tribes. However, the Western tribes misunderstood this as idolatrous worship and were ready to go to war. The Eastern tribes patiently explained their case and motives and avoided an all out conflict. It is important to note that both sides were zealous for the glory of God. After receiving clarity in the situation, they rejoiced and blessed God together.

Christians are to keep both the purity and unity of the church. Sometimes, however, we refuse to listen to one another and fail to keep unity. Regrettably we may tolerate sin and draw back from controversy to keep unity and peace. In His high priestly prayer, Jesus prayed for His people to be sanctified by the truth (Jn 17:17), and to be brought to complete unity (Jn 17:23). Jesus’ people are to zealously pursue the purity and unity of the church.

Prayer: Lord, help us grow in Jesus so that we may build up your church with purity as well as unity.

One Word: Unity in purity
