THE LAW OF THE NAZARITE

Passage: Numbers 6:1~21

Key verse: 6:8

First, becoming a Nazirite (1-12). Any Israelite man or woman could make a special vow of dedication to the LORD. These vows were meant to draw a person closer to God. The person was called a Nazirite and was under Nazirite laws during the period of the vow. Nazirites were not to drink wine or eat anything related to grapes. They were not allowed to cut their hair but were to let it grow out. They had to avoid dead bodies. Defilement during the vow required multiple offerings and restarting the period of the vow from the beginning. Nazirites were held to the same or an even higher standard than the priests (Lev. 10:8-11; Lev 21). Like the priests, Nazirites were consecrated to the LORD during the period of their vow. Second, the end of the dedication period (13-21). Nazirites finished their vows by presenting burnt, sin, fellowship, grain and drink offerings. After the priest made the offerings, the Nazirite's head was shaved and the hair burned. A portion of the offerings belonged to the priest.

Prayer: Lord, draw me closer to you and consecrate me for your will.

One Word: Consecrated to the LORD
