JESUS' DEATH AND BURIAL

Passage: Luke 23:44~56

Key verse: 46

1. Jesus breathed his last (44-49)

As Jesus' final hours on earth ebbed away, the sun refused to shine and darkness covered the earth at midday as if at midnight. The temple curtain, thick and heavy as it was, tore in two, opening the way to Holy God. In his last breath, Jesus called out, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Jesus our Messiah finished the Father's will to die as the Lamb of God and to redeem us from sin and death. He obeyed God even to death on a cross. The centurion guarding the cross could not help but cry out, "Surely, this was a righteous man." He knew what was in a man and testified to Jesus' righteousness, even in death.

2. Jesus was buried (50-56)

Joseph, a Jewish ruler, who did not consent to Jesus' death, boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. He took it down from the cross, wrapped it in linen, and placed it in a new tomb. Because of his status, he is a key witness of Jesus' burial. Faithful women from Galilee kept watch and went home to prepare spices for Jesus' body after resting on the Sabbath. They are also witnesses of Jesus' death and burial. Jesus died and was buried to take away my sins. By faith, my old self died with him (Ro 6:4).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for me and taking away my sins and burying my old self with you.

One Word: Jesus died and took away my sins
