INTRO TO THE GOSPEL OF JOHN, Sarah Barry
'IT IS FOR YOUR GOOD THAT I AM GOING'
Passage: John 16:1~15
Key verse: 7a
16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

1. "...unless I go away..." (1-11)
The world hated the disciples. How? They put them out of the synagogues and they thought killing them was doing a service to God. Jesus was leaving them in such a time, and the disciples were grieving. But Jesus taught them it was to their benefit he was going. Because he was going, he could send them the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would be their Advocate. He would testify that the world was wrong about sin (unbelief) and righteousness (Jesus going to the Father) and judgment (sin is condemned).
2. He will guide you into all truth (12-15)
The Holy Spirit would come and guide the disciples into all truth. The Spirit would make known all that it received from Jesus. The Holy Spirit would be with the disciples after Jesus left them. It would guide them and tell them all they needed to know to continue to grow as Jesus' disciples. The Holy Spirit does the same with us. God sends the Holy Spirit to us as well. He will be our advocate and will guide us in the truth of God.
Prayer: Lord, give me your truth through the Holy Spirit.
One Word: The Holy Spirit; the Spirit of truth
