'TAKE HEART! I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD'

Passage: John 16:16~33

Key verse: 33b

1. The disciples' confusion (16-24)

Jesus' teaching about his departure confused the disciples. They didn't know what he meant by in a little while they wouldn't see him, then in a little while they would, because he was going to the Father. Jesus sensed their confusion and helped them with the analogy of childbirth. When Jesus left, they would be like a birthing mother, in much pain, but that pain would bring great joy when Jesus came again!

2. Take heart! (25-33)

Before he left them, Jesus really wanted his disciples to know and understand who he was and what he was doing. They would understand one day. Jesus said once again that he was going back to the Father. Finally the disciples understood! They believed that Jesus came from God. Jesus knew they were still weak and would soon desert him. But Jesus wasn't sad. He was joyful for his Father was with him. So Jesus could say, "Take heart! I have overcome the world."

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the joy of Jesus. May the joy of Jesus be our joy and the joy of others all around the world.

One Word: Take heart! I have overcome the world.
