ELIJAH AND TH EPROPHETS OF BAAL

Passage: 1Kings 18:20~46

Key verse: 21

1. Follow whoever is God (20-21)

While Ahab assembled the prophets of Baal, Elijah challenged the people to make a decision. Is the Lord God? Or is Baal God? The people were non-committal in their worship. Sometimes they would follow Baal, and sometimes they would follow the Lord. They needed to make a decision and follow one as the true God. Elijah's words fell on deaf ears.

2. The Lord shows he is God (22-46)

Four hundred prophets of Baal showed up. Elijah was the Lord's only representative. The prophets of Baal cried and wailed and cut themselves until midday. Elijah taunted them to yell all the louder to wake Baal up. But nothing happened. Elijah had the wood at his altar drenched with water, making it impossible to burn. But when he prayed to the Lord God, he answered and fire came and burned the altar and the sacrifice. As a result, the people shouted "The Lord-he is God!" They turned on the prophets of Baal and slaughtered them. Elijah helped his people Israel return to God.

Prayer: Lord, you alone are God! Help us to repent our double-mindedness and worship you alone.

One Word: The Lord is God; follow Him!
