REPENT OF THIS WICKEDNESS

Passage: Acts 8:9~25

Key verse: 22

1. The name of Jesus Christ in Samaria (9-13)

In Samaria there was a sorcerer named Simon who enjoyed people's praise and attention. That was, until Philip turned up and preached the good news of the kingdom of God and gave glory instead to the name of Jesus. People immediately saw the difference in Philip's life-giving message, the truth, love and real forgiving power of Jesus. Even Simon himself was baptized and followed Philip everywhere, amazed by the great signs and miracles he saw.

2. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord (14-25)

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard the Samaritans had accepted the word, they sent Peter and John to encourage them, pray for them and welcome them into the church. They laid their hands on these new believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw this, he thought he could buy the Holy Spirit's power for himself and offered the apostles money. This revealed his corrupt heart. Peter rebuked him and told him to pray and repent his wickedness. The Holy Spirit always works to glorify Jesus; he can't be bought!

Prayer: Lord, give me your Holy Spirit to preach and lift up the name of Jesus.

One Word: The Holy Spirit is given and cannot be bought
