Mark Key Verse Summary, Steve Stasinos
LOVE YOUR GOD AND YOUR NEIGHBOR
Passage: Mark 12:28~37
Key verse: 30
The Greatest Commandment(A)
28 One of the teachers of the law(B) came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[b](C) 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c](D) There is no commandment greater than these.”
32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.(E) 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”(F)
34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”(G) And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.(H)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(I)(J)
35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts,(K) he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?(L) 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit,(M) declared:
37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
The large crowd(O) listened to him with delight.

1. The Lord is one (28-34)
Jesus answered a teacher of the law, saying that the most important commandment is to know God as the Sovereign Lord of the universe. He is the only God. Therefore, we should love him with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength (Deut 6:5). We then should love our neighbor as ourselves too. But still, Jesus said to the teacher of the law who knew this very well, 'you are very near to the kingdom of God.' It is because no one can keep God's command. All must come to Jesus and be forgiven to enter the kingdom of God.
2. Jesus, the Lord of David (35-37)
Here Jesus further revealed who he was. He was a son of David, the promised Messiah. Therefore, he is the Lord of David. The teacher of the law must know Jesus as the Lord, the only God who would die for him. We can enter the kingdom of God not by keeping the command but by faith in Jesus, the Lord, who died for our sins and was raised from the dead to give us eternal life in the kingdom of God.
Prayer: Lord, Jesus, you are the Messiah who died for our sins. Therefore, we love you more than anyone and anything on earth. Let me also love my neighbors for whom you died.
One Word: Love God and love our neighbors only through faith in Jesus!
