PUNISHMENTS FOR DISOBEDIENCE

Passage: Leviticus 26:14~33

Key verse: 26:18

First, 'if you will not listen to me' (14-22). The warnings of punishment are many more than the promises of blessing (just like Dt 28), perhaps because our fear of God is weak. Disobedience and rebellion against God's laws would result in terror, wasting diseases, theft, defeat, oppressive rule and fearful flight. If they still won't listen but remain hostile toward God, they would suffer seven times over with drought, famine and wild beasts. Second, 'if you don't accept my correction' (23-33). All this trouble is intended as 'correction' (23), or God's disciplinary love (Heb 12:6-10). Further stubbornness would lead to conquest and plague, even cannibalism to survive (29). God is not pleased with idolatry (30) or pretend worship (31). This would lead to exile and deserted towns (33).

Prayer: Lord, forgive my lack of fear of God and obedience to your holy word. Help me not abhor or ignore your word but delight in it. Help me to accept hardship as your disciplinary love that leads me to love and fear you.

One Word: Love and fear God, accept his correction
