A VOICE OF ONE CALLING IN THE DESERT

Passage: Luke 3:1~20

Key verse: 3:4b

First, the word of God came to John (1-6). The times in which John the Baptist lived were very dark. Israel was divided into four parts each ruled by a despot. The priesthood was full of corruption, as there were two high priests functioning at the same time. But in such times, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. When we are tempted to despair, we must meditate on the word of God all the more and hear God's voice. God was raising up John as a forerunner to the Messiah who would prepare the way for him according to the word of Isaiah the prophet. Second, produce fruit in keeping with repentance (7-20). John's message was clear and straightforward. Sinners need to repent and produce fruit in keeping with repentance. John instructed the people not to be selfish but to share what they had with their neighbors. He told tax collectors not to collect more than what they were required to and he told soldiers not to extort money or accuse people falsely. Repentance should be practical. John also introduced the people to the Messiah coming after him (16-18).

Prayer: Lord, help me not to despair in dark times but rather meditate on the word of God. Help me produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

One Word: Prepare the way of the Lord
