'IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU TO BE ANGRY?'

Passage: Jonah 4:1~11

Key verse: 4

1. God's compassion made Jonah angry (1-4)

Jonah felt God's mercy was very wrong. He was insulted that God would apply mercy to Nineveh. This made him so angry he wanted to die. God appeals to Jonah: "Is it right for you to be angry?" Jonah wanted God to like who he likes and hate who he hates; but God does not change to meet Jonah's expectation. He is a gracious and compassionate God who has mercy for all who repent and believe; even those who we don't like.

2. "Should I not have concern?" (5-11)

Since Jonah was not listening, God again shows grace to him, this time through a shading plant. Jonah is so happy for its shade, but then a worm eats it and he again is enraged. God reveals his mind - what is right: should not God have concern for the people of Nineveh, more than 120,000 people who have no idea of right and wrong?

Prayer: Father, you are gracious and compassionate to me, which I like, but also to all people, which I sometimes don't like. Change my heart to match your concern for all people.

One Word: God is concerned for all; am I?
