THE COVENANT OF THE LORD YOUR GOD

Passage: Deuteronomy 4:15~49

Key verse: 23

The first warning concerns idolatry. They should not worship idols because they saw and experienced the living God (11-14). Unlike idolatrous nations, God redeemed Israel (20) and made his covenant with Israel. God is the LORD our God. We are in a relationship with a God (23) who, out of love, gets angry and jealous (24) when we cheat on him. Maintaining this love relationship is the key to overcoming idolatry.

What should the Israelites do if they forget and fall into sin? God says, “seek the LORD your God… you will find him… (29).” They did not deserve this, but God was merciful and faithful (31). God has proved this mercy and faithfulness to us through the cross of Jesus. Let us seek him with all our heart and soul.

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. To avoid idolatry, they must remember what God has specifically done: what they saw, experienced, and so on. God did these things so they may know who God is (35). By reminding ourselves of God’s grace in our lives, we maintain a love relationship with him. Also, by keeping his decrees and commands (40), daily life presents opportunities to press into this love relationship with our covenant God.

Prayer: Father, thank you for revealing yourself to me through a new covenant with Jesus. Help me to remember your grace and keep your covenant.

One Word: The LORD is God; there is no other
