JESUS’ BLOOD OF THE COVENANT, Ron Ward
JESUS IS ARRESTED
Passage: Mark 14:43~52
Key verse: 49
Jesus Arrested(A)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

1. Judas betrays Jesus (43-49)
Judas was a disciple who was trained with the rest, but he betrayed Jesus for money. He handed Jesus over to the religious leaders. When the men seized Jesus, one disciple drew his sword and cut off a man's ear, but Jesus restrained his disciples. He taught his followers and captors alike that it is God who is in control. The Scriptures must be fulfilled.
2. Everyone deserted him (50-52)
A short time before, all the disciples insisted that they would never disown Jesus. But Jesus knew that his sheep would be scattered, as the Scripture said (14:27). They all deserted him. It is thought that the young man who fled naked was the author Mark himself.
Prayer: Lord, teach me to hold on to the Scriptures and remember Sovereign God in times of stress.
One Word: The Scriptures must be fulfilled
