TWO OLD PERSONS' LIFE OF FAITH, Dr. Samuel Lee
MARY'S SONG OF PRAISE
Passage: Luke 1:39~56
Key verse: 49
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(A) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(B) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(C) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(D) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Mary’s Song(E)
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord(F)
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(G)
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(H)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(I)
49 for the Mighty One has done great things(J) for me—
holy is his name.(K)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.(L)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;(M)
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.(N)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.(O)
53 He has filled the hungry with good things(P)
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful(Q)
55 to Abraham and his descendants(R) forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

1. Blessed is she who has believed (39-45)
After hearing the angel Gabriel, Mary visited her relative Elizabeth's home. Pre-born baby John the Baptist leaped for joy. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth recognized Mary as blessed and her child as blessed. The child in Mary was the Lord. Blessed are those who believe God's promises.
2. My soul glorifies the Lord (46-56)
Mary's soul and spirit broke out in praises to God her Savior. God was mindful of her humble state. All generations would call her blessed, for the Holy and Mighty One had done great things for her and for Israel. What had God done? Read verses 51-55, which describe God's activity. God scatters the proud but lifts up the humble who trust in him. God is merciful to those who fear him. He helps the weak and needy. God keeps his promises.
Prayer: God our Savior, great is your mercy, which we do not deserve. Faithful you are to your promises. May our souls rejoice in who you are and what you have done, are doing and will do in Jesus' name. Amen.
One Word: Praise God for who he is and what he has done
